How to become a Cadet

The week after you visit us, should  you be interested in joining, you  should attend regular meetings.

If you are a cadet you will be inducted into a training program to get them up to speed on the basics of being a cadet in Civil Air Patrol. They will be presented with a membership form which they will be allowed to turn in a minimum of three weeks later (this gives both us and the cadet a chance to get to know one another). Assuming they meet all the requirements and pass the few tests they need to take, they will finish the 12-week training course having completed their first achievement (and earned their first “stripe”, or promotion).

To join Civil Air Patrol as a cadet you must be:

  • At least 12 years old and not yet 19 years old.
    • If not yet 12 years of age, the only exception is if you are actively attending sixth grade in a school that has an active CAP Middle School Initiative program.
  • Enrolled in or graduated from a private, public, home school, or college academic program with a satisfactory record of achievement.
  • Single, or married and under age 18.
  • Not a member of the active duty Armed Services (National Guard and Reserves are not considered active duty military).
  • A US citizen, or alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or any lawfully admitted non-citizen residing in the US specifically approved by CAP NHQ.
  • Of good moral character.
  • If a former CAP member, not terminated for misconduct.
  • Accepted by the unit and higher headquarters.
